Designed to attract the rich and built by Harland and Wolff for the White Star Line,Titanic was the largest passenger ship of its day. Her three steam turbine engines delivered 51000 horsepower and gave the ship a top speed of 22.5 knots. Its official time of sinking is 2:20 A.M. April 15, 1912.
First Class Suites provided elegant accommodations on board wiht a setting room, bedroom, wardroom and private bath. Some featured an adjoining cabin for one's personal servant.
Titanic and its sister ship, Olympic, were unequaled in the luxuriousness of various rooms and appointments in First and Second Class. Indeed Second Class accommodations were so superior that they often excelled First Class facilities aboard other ships.
The 16 lifeboats and 4 collapsible boats could hold 1100 people if full. Harland and Wolff had actually exceeded the legal safety standards regarding the provision of lifeboats. Because the first lifeboats lowered had few passengers, only 703 people of the 2207 on board actually survived.
